U13 Female Evaluation Information

Dear U13 Female Hockey Families,
My name is Kristin Coulter, and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Female Director for U9 to U13. I will also be supporting U15 to U18 until a replacement director is found.
I am looking forward to connecting with all of you throughout the season and am excited to get this great sport underway!
I am passionate about fostering a love for the game, being transparent, and helping create an association where everyone can thrive. Here’s to a fun, positive, and memorable season for our players!
As we continue to develop our U13 female program, we want to provide some clarity around how the U13 A team will be established this season.
The introduction of an A team is an exciting opportunity for our players. As this is a new process, our goal is to make the evaluation and selection process as fair, consistent and transparent as possible.
Evaluation Process
The U13 A team will be established through two scrimmage sessions. Players will be evaluated in game situations, allowing evaluators to assess their overall hockey abilities in a realistic environment.
Evaluators will consider areas including:
  • Skating and puck skills
  • Passing, shooting and puck control
  • Hockey sense and decision-making
  • Defensive play
  • Compete level and work ethic
  • Team play and communication
  • Overall impact during game situations
Multiple evaluators will be involved, and the two scrimmages will provide players with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their abilities.
A Team Selection
The A team roster will follow an 80/20 approach.
Approximately 80% of the roster will be determined by the highest overall evaluation results from the three scrimmages. This provides an objective foundation for the majority of the team.
The remaining approximately 20% of the roster will be selected by the A-team coach. This provides the coach with some flexibility to consider factors that may not be fully captured during the three evaluation sessions, including previous knowledge of a player’s abilities, past performance and statistics, positional needs, leadership, team dynamics, work ethic, attitude and off-ice composure.
The A team will be playing in the NEAHL and will be tiered accordingly. The manager will have to attend the NEAHL meeting (details to come). The A team will be playing roughly 30 games before playoffs and will NOT be included in the home tournament as this is an inaugural year and there isn’t ice available. LMHA is hosting Girls Hockey Weekend in Lloydminster in conjunction with the female tournament-Feb 5-7, the goal is to have all female teams play one game that weekend, there will be ice time for the A team to schedule a game or two within this weekend. More details to come.
The U 13 house team will play in the ECAFHL which consisted of 8 teams last year. They played roughly 27 games before playoffs. The house team will be included in the 4th Meridian female hockey tournament.
Coach Selection
The board of directors will be responsible for selecting the A-team coach.
To ensure transparency and avoid a conflict of interest, the coach will be selected from candidates whose daughter has ranked within the top 80% of the A-team evaluation results.
This allows the coach to have a meaningful role in the final 20% of roster decisions while ensuring that the coach selection itself is connected to the established evaluation process.
Any coaches that have put in an application and are wanting to coach are asked to be at the evaluation skates. The coaches will be named once the evaluation weekend is over. The 20% of the A team will be selected in conjunction with the coach and various board members at a later date.
